Software Market

This article makes it sound like the software market isn't that great. What are your opinions on the feasibility of marketing your own software and how it should be done? I ask because eventually I am going to make a decision on what career path I should take...what do you guys think? I know that software development will never be obsolete, but the problem of freeware is still there.
