Gmail Stopped Showing Boldface, Ital, Underline

Hi...I've been using Gmail with IE9 and Chrome.(Windows 7) All worked well, but then--without any apparent reason--the Gmail I use in Chrome will not allow me to boldface, Italicize, underline, etc. And when I click on Settings, nothing opens. It's not like it didn't work correctly before, so I'm bewildered. Any ideas? :confused: Thanks.
