Frustrated. I had posted this issue nearly two weeks ago out of desparation and have been doing research across multiple tech forums to fix my desktop issues...found out the symptoms ain't unique.
Background: I began having slow internet issues, specifically downloads, with my HP Windows 7 (64bit) desktop about 6 months after purchase (it is a 1.5 year old dinosaur). At the time, I was running McAfee and kept getting the annoying "your firewall is down, click to upgrade" message. I ran Malware Bytes, uninstalled McAfee (so I thought), and downloaded my ISP (Comcast) Norton security suite from their site. Download speed situation didn't improve and then I began to get the Norton 5013,3 Error Code. As advised by one of the guys here, I ran the McAffee complete uninstall as well as Norton's. Added to that, my firewall was down, so I did a deep scan (nothing malicious detected) and then the popular BFE and other step by step stuff provided by a kind soul on the Microsoft community forum to fix registry issues. Firewall is back on and I am now using MSE for security protection - had enough of Norton/McAfee. Yesterday, I activated service on a "new and improved" Comcast modem which I am supposed to be able to get the most out of the speed available. My speed test for downloads on the HP desktop: 0.5Mbps.
Latest research indicated a potential communication issue between my Linksys router (model WRT160N version 1.0) and Windows 7...requires an update to the firmware or drivers or something. My last hope of fixing this myself (which is beyond stretching my capabilities - I am a smart girl, but this really sucks) is trying this last thing. Problems: I can not find my router username/password....which is apparently different than my network ones (really????)....and I don't know how to interpret the cmd run (recommended by a previous Tech Guy forum discussion thread) - the media disconnected items are worrisome. Would really appreciate any guidance/help in troubleshooting/resolving this issue. My Dell laptop (work computer) and MAC laptop work just fine - they are speedy. It is solely the desktop that is having these problems...making my hair turn gray :(. It would be a lovely Xmas gift to have my desktop functional again...thanks so much in advance.
