Networking Problem, XP and Win 7

I've had a home network for quite a while. I'm not sure exactly how I set it up in the first place because it was kind of a long time ago, but it worked without a problem, file and printer sharing etc for about a year. In the last couple of weeks, though, something's gone wrong. I attempted to fix it, and think I made it worse.

I have 2 computers on the network primarily, one is Windows 7 (laptop) and the other is XP (desktop). Whatever went wrong was likely originated with the laptop - I rarely use the desktop and haven't installed anything new on it for... well, probably most of the year.

They are both able to access the wireless network, and internet through it without a problem. They can both ping the other without packet loss etc. But they no longer want to talk to one another apart from that. I can no longer access files on the other computer, or the printer (connected to the desktop) if I'm using the laptop.

I think the laptop knows the desktop is there, because it does come up under Network in explorer. But if I click on it, it says the other computer must be offline, or a problem with the network.

Help?
