speed

sorry if in wrong place. haven't worked on pc's in awhile so am a little lost.
need refresher course here. what is speed? is that the ram? or is that memory?
and how can you tell what your system can handle like up to what gb etc.

my system seems to run a bit slow and have done all that I can think of to speed it up some.
