preventive prescriptions?

My 14 yr old son has taken total control over our Gateway desktop PC running Windows 7 Pro with his gaming programs etc...

I was wondering since he is downloading everything at will, what programs do you recommend I have in place to prevent virus or malware?

los, is there a program I should run now to see if I have any potential problems?
