Internet being really slow and limited fix options

hey guys was kind of hoping for some insight here on this problem. My laptop is having some troubles just starting yesterday with connection speeds. It literally takes me 5 and a half minutes to load up my homepage which is google.com in my browser and when playing my online game it lets me sit in the chat channels fine yet when i actually enter the world itself it works fine for about 10 seconds and then suddenly sky rockets to about 5000 ping and drops the game. I am renting a room and the internet is my landlord's ( they dont actually live here) and i do not have access to the router itself. I am not a computer guru in anyways and can use some help fixing this issue with only what can be done wirelessly and without having to access the physical router or logging into the router.
thanks this computer is running windows vista home premium 32 bit and is an acer aspire 5535 series. If anymore information is required please let me know
