No Media Player working with Windows 7

My (college age) daughter has a Toshiba Satellite L505D that has suddenly developed a problem playing any CDs or DVDs. She is running Windows 7, has all current & available drivers, & the DVD/CD (combo) drive is functional. Doesn't matter which media player she uses, (Windows Media Player, Real Player, Toshiba DVD Player, VLC Media player) The dvd (or cd) loads, comes up in the chosen player, advances to maybe the menu screen (of the movie) or sometimes only to the FBI warning, etc. then freezes. In fact it then freezes the entire computer & after numerous tries in Task manager usually closes. Since it is not the drive or the media players, since it doesn't matter which media player is used is this a Windows 7 problem? What is the fix?
