Problem with 'Services' resulting in intermittent connectivity

First off, I'm 90% that everything here is 100% my fault. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure out exactly what I did. Here goes:

I was recently given this computer by a friend, wiped clean and with a fresh install of Win7. There was a problem with my wireless wherein it would not automatically log me in. In an attempt to solve this, I completely borked my computers ability to log on to the wireless network. I would typically get a DNS error, but not always. In the end, I just connected my powerline wire and forgot all about it.

Now, however, my ethernet cable received some damage and doesn't work, so I figured I'd try to get this wireless working too. I have absolutely no idea what to do. I have been, with some tinkering gotten the internet to work, but only about 50% of the time. It'll work for a while and then it'll just stop. I can occasionally get it to work by restarting the WLAN service, failing that removing and reinserting the wireless dongle, failing that a restart. Nothing is permanent. If there was a way to reset all the services to their default setting, that may fix the problem. I've been unable to find a way, so perhaps some of you intelligent folks could help me out a bit?

I should note that I am High-functioning autistic, and sometimes have trouble with verbal/written instructions. Please be as concise and clear as you can and avoid the use of metaphor or simile. Thanks in advance for the help.
