Black screen for HP Pavilion tx2000

Hello Tech Support Guy forums! I'm Adams01, and I'm new to this forum.

I have a question regarding my HP Pavilion tx2000 laptop. It's a laptop I got a while back... maybe 4 years ago. I think that's its name. But then on a sticker near the touch pad (that serves as a mouse), it says "HP Pavilion tx2510us Entertainment Notebook PC". So that might be its name as well.

So my question is, my screen is black when I turn it on. I'll try to go in-depth for this. When I flip the power switch (it's a sliding thing), my laptop makes the sound that means it's turning on. The "rrr" and the lights. The lights for the monitor come on as well. So the lights refer to these blue (lit-in-the-background) buttons (all of which are on the monitor section). They're not important. Basically, the laptop looks and sounds "on". However, the screen is completely black. I don't see the "HP" name come up or anything. It then, after a bit, makes the "bing!" noise and then I assume it turns on to the desktop. There's no image. However, because this laptop is touch-screen, I just wait for it to finish loading. I then poke my finger at the screen's top, push Alt+F4, push down twice (to the Shut Down option), and push Enter. It shuts down.

This doesn't always happen. It worked two days ago. Everything was normal. There's like a week-long cooldown period before the screen turns on or something... It sometimes works. It sometimes doesn't. Anyway, I guess I should add some extraneous information that I hope may help in the diagnosis of the laptop's problem or its type. There are these stickers on the laptop that came with it, and I never removed them. "AMD (with a green arrow pointing up-right / Turion X2 / Ultra / 64". (The slashes are a new line for the sticker. So it's like several lines of text on one sticker.) "ATI / RADEON / Graphics". And on the monitor (the part of the laptop with the screen), it says "Altec Lansing" near the bottom.

I've Googled on this laptop (my dad's), and it seems I'm not the first. I've read something about the video card being faulty.. or maybe the wires that connect to the monitor. I've read solutions such as connecting it to an external monitor (but I don't have the wire thing to do so), or pushing JKL with my palm HARD while turning the laptop on. Or turning the screen to an obtuse angle (greater than 90 degrees) to do something with the wires. Again, I don't understand what's wrong. It just works randomly at times, and doesn't. I also don't really know much about my laptop. I just use it. So I don't know about its little details that some people ask. Sort of like... my type of video card or thingies. Sorry if I couldn't provide more information! If you guys need more, you could still ask and I'll try to find out somehow. (I appreciate it!)

I hope this wasn't too long to read, or that I rambled. Thank you Tech Support Guy! :)

P.S. I don't use a battery for my laptop. I just stick the wire into the circular hole and then into a socket that has the protection from surges.

Edit 1: I forgot to mention. It's the Windows Vista Home edition.
