This is a strange problem. I have Windows XP on a desktop. I have an external USB webcam (was Logitech Pro 9000, now Logitech C920).
The first time I use the webcam in any way (video, mic, etc), the computer freezes for around 15 seconds (sometimes longer, 30s, 1 min, etc). Then it works fine. However, if I've used the webcam recently, then starting it again (via skype or "Scanner wizard" works without freezing the PC.
To be clear:
-Using the webcam for the first time (since boot, or for the day) causes 15-20 second freeze of PC (no sound, no input, display frozen), then comes back like normal. After delay webcam works fine. During the freeze, webcam's LED turns on & stays on.
-If the webcam has been used recently, there is either no freeze at all, or a very slight one.
I've uninstalled drivers, uninstalled the hidden devices in devmgmt.msc (even the disconnected ones). I can't figure out why the webcam is freezing the computer, and why it only happens when the webcam has been idle for more than a period of time (can't figure out exactly how long it takes to "reset").
One wrinkle - I upgraded my motherboard a bit ago w/o reinstalling XP, using the method where you clean out all system devices, boot generic, and then install the new motherboard's devices. This could be interfering, not sure.
I'm trying to solve this w/o having to reinstall XP (which is a lot of time). If I can't figure out what's causing this, then I'll just have to wait till I have time to reinstall.
Has anyone seen this type of problem before? Any ideas how to debug this? Thanks!
