It's been a while since I had to troubleshoot a real problem so it seems I forgot most stuff & not have kept up to date. Anyways I have a friend from work who has a problem with a old Windows XP machine she says it cant connect to the internet so I told her to bring her machine into work so I can attempt to fix it. When a network cable is attached to the network card it stays stuck on trying to acquire a address screen.

Things I have tried:

Scan with AVG Antivirus
*Results* no viruses detected.

Scan with MalwareBytes
*Results* No threats detected (was scanned by my friend but in the process of scanning now.)

Scan with SuperAntiSpyware
*Results* No threats detected (was scanned by my friend but in the process of scanning now.)

Command Prompt Commands: (Ethernet Cable is connected while attempting to do these)

ipconfig /release
*Results* IP Address for local Area Connection has already been released.

ipconfig /renew
*Results* An Error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : The RPC Server is unavailable.

I then went to run -> Services.msc and checked the Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
*Results* says it is started and it is also set to automatic. I have noticed that in the dependencies tab where it says "This service depends on the following system components" (1st box) is all blank. I'm pretty sure there is supposed to be something there. the 2nd box under it has a lot of things in there.

I have noticed that after installing AVG yesterday the system started to get REALLY SLOW.... I opened the Windows Task Manager and checked the processes running and saw the CPU usage was at 100% but didn't see any programs consistently taking a lot of CPU power. . I then started to disable some startup programs through MSconfig and after a restart I noticed a new icon of a windows indexing service.

System Restore
*Results* No internet connection still. Slow down still continues.

system is currently being scanned by SuperAntiSpyware at the moment. Will be watching this thread frequently and posting any asap if any changes occur.

There were some other things I had tried and did not post but since I forgot the results (none seem to work) I wont get into them now and try them again.
