Hello!
I'm planning a network in my new home and I want to have something as versatile as possible. I'm looking for a recommendation on a network switch for home use, recognizing that my needs may wade into the small business category.
My new home has 8 data drops wired with presumably standard Cat5. I will also need 4-5 dedicated ethernet connections in my utility room (where my switch will also reside) for direct connection to AV devices (eg XBox360, control4, russound, DVD player, TV). By my math a 16-port unmanaged switch should suffice (paired with my Time Capsule which I plan to continue to use as my router). I also believe I need gigabit ethernet as we like to move files to other computers around the house and want reasonable speed.
My question is two fold: I need to have access points on the upper levels of my home to ensure adequate wireless signal. Should I consider a 16 port gigabit with PoE? Can anyone recommend a specific switch that would suit my needs (PoE or no PoE)? I'm getting a bit lost in the choices-- my only certainty is I want reliability and ease for implementing remote access points.
Thanks!
