Okay so there is a big compressed .7z file folder containing photos that other than de-fragmenting is left untouched yet it keeps becoming fragmented? what is causing this, I was under the impression fragmenting usually only occurred when you delete/edit/move/etc files?

Slow libraries (but not fixed by standard methods!)

Hey guys,

So I've been using Windows 8 for quite a bit now, since October probably. Never had issues with it. Around Christmas time, I bought a 750GB 7200 spin HDD for my laptop, replacing my 250GB one. I used acronis to make a direct copy (probably not the best idea, but with 300GB of steam files to download again, I couldn't feasibly re-install windows fresh) and it's worked flawlessly since.

About 2 weeks ago, I've had a problem with my libraries c.f. http://tinypic.com/r/10wi137/6

I've followed some instructions on the internet c.f. http://tinyurl.com/mbobbz to reset certain customisations in Windows 8 libraries, and view all files in the folder as a lift of documents, rather than the slow loading pic / video setting.

Nothing is working. It's a right pain, because I can navigate to my google drive folder for work or to my media files. It's not just affecting my libraries, but it's affecting my computer and USB drives.

I've got clean scans with Norton 360, I'm quite tech savvy so I know it's not a virus, it seems like a windows 8 reinstallation would be ideal, but I really DON'T want to do that.

So guys, any help here please. I'm having to restart my PC, and then after 10 mins it goes from normal to no loading.

I've often seen ending explorer.exe and starting it elevated, helps, but again maybe for 10+ mins before it goes crappy again.

Thanks, O.

Laptop lags when trying to connect to the network

We just upgraded our internet, which also meant installing a new WiFi router, and mostly it's working fine. The two desktops and two of the laptops in the house all play nicely with the new router, but the third one (an old Fujitsu Siemens AMILO La1703 running Vista Basic) mostly stops responding when I try to connect to the new network. Any other network works fine. I can't actually connect to them since I don't know the keys, but it doesn't affect the laptop. When I try to connect to our new network however, the network connection dialog boxes stops responding and if I try to restart Explorer I still can't open any network related settings or menus. Most of the other stuff works.

I have tried manually configuring the network with the SSID and network key, but the result was just that I couldn't open the network settings at all, even after a reboot, since it was already trying to connect. I have also tried booting up in network enabled safe mode, same thing happens. All drivers are the latest.

If I connect it to the router with a cable everything works fine.

I have tried everything I can think of, and even Google seem to lack answers, so before I do a reinstall of Windows, I thought I'd ask here.

Solved: Windows media player Wont play DVD's

Hi there, I am having great difficulty playing DVD's via windows media Player 11

Strange thing is I can play CD's but when I try to play a DVD I get this message: Windows Media Player cannot find the file. If you are trying to play, burn, or sync an item that is in your library, the item might point to a file that has been moved, renamed, or deleted.

It's a working DVD it plays in my other DVD Player.

Thanks

Disadvantages/Problems with Port Forwarding

So, here's the deal:

I'm trying to set up a minecraft server for me and my friend. I told the administrator of my router (My father) and he said that port forwarding has always screwed up the router in the past. Why is that? Did he do something wrong, or is it really that malicious?

Any response would be greatly appreciated

Will MS Office 2000 load in a 64-bit OS?

Will Office 2000 install on Windows 7 64-bit?

I have ordered a 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium. I have Office 2000 and an Upgrade release of Office 2003. I have to load the former to install the upgrade. The 2003 upgrade then completely removes the 2000 release. Here's the hurdle: I cannot get to 2003 without loading 2000 first.
(Did 64 bit even exist back then?)

Best paper presentation topic

Hi guys, I'm new to this illustrious community. My friend told me about this site. After going through the threads, I've been really impressed. I've decided to stay active henceforth. The reason I signed up here was because I'm in need of some suggestions.

Me and my friends have planned to do a paper presentation. The topic can be anything which is IT related but with an emphasis on community services. The theme is basically "computing for community services".

This will be my first presentation. I would be extremely grateful if I could get suggestions on the topic which might help me. As of now, I've thought of the following topics

Open source technology
Distributed systems and their use in health care
Cyber Crime and Security

I would really appreciate suggestions on the topic which might help me compile the paper in a short duration of time and something which is easy to learn(as it is my first paper).

Hey, Ryan here and I have been experienceing some Internet problems over the past months. This all started when I got my brand new pc. So when i got my computer, my internet was randomly crashing and I didn't know what to do. So at that time I thought it was the router so I attempted to reset it, but completely failed and I had to get my father to fix it. But the good news about me breaking my router was my Internet stared working. So now after a while it stopped working agin and I don't want to break my router again to solve connection issues. Also, this is the only PC with this problem and disabling my wifi adapter temporary fixes my internet problems. Yeah, so hopefully someone could help me with this frustrating problem, thanks.

Oh and here is my computer and Internet information:
Windows 8 hp desktop
Ralink 802.11bgn wifi adapter
I have a default gateway and a assigned IP address
(I will attempt to post more from my computer)

My laptop has been extremely slow in the last couple of weeks. I tried everything I could think of clean it up, but now it's worse than ever. Sometimes it takes a couple of minutes for just Google to come up. And even when I'm on the Internet, each time I click it's another couple of minutes at the least. It's the same slow problem for my email; sometimes it won't even connect. Below are the requested logs. Thanks for any help.

Reinstalling on new internal HDD

Hi all,

IS there an easy way to reinstall software on a new internal HDD (Western Digital 2TB) on myt Win 7 64 bit PC? I'd really prefer not to delete, then reinstall everything. I thought there might be a (free) tool/utility that may let me drag and drop programs onto my new HDD and it would automatically install properly on the new drive?

Thanks for anyones help.

My sister's Toshiba laptop has been in "recovering orphaned file" mode for 24 hours. Is this normal? What should she expect to happen? She has Windows 7, and any answers you can give us would be very appreciated! Thank you!

(Hope i have posted in right section)
Ok, so i just bought a computer from my friend (running vista ultimate), and put some new ram into it (Its all the same make of ram but ram was second hand) to go along with the existing ram, it was working fine for a good few days now it has started to BSOD every now and again and somtimes says no audio device installed when i log back in i system resore (which it says doesnt work but brings back my sound) only to have to do it again after it BSOD's

Then i shut down the computer and turned it back on this morning like normal and now it only brings up a temporary profile and thats everytime i restart the computer, if i try to play games or watch videos or listen to music i am getting this stuttering problem where the sound goes jittery and the game im playing freezes and comes back on in a second or two even though it should be running them no problem.

also it wont allow windows updates. "Windows cant check for updates"

Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 3.01 GHz

RAM : 5.00GB Crosair

System type: 32-bit Operating System

I know a bit about computers but im no expert so i dont know what info will help or not.

Thanks in advance for anyone that would like to help! :)

Intermittent freezing + wild CPU usage

Good evening. :)

Due to the nature of this question I really wasn't entirely sure which was the most suitable forum, please accept my apologies if I've misplaced it.

I have a self build PC (specs below) which was built in December 12. I first noticed the issue around an hour after finalising the Windows 7 installation. Initially I thought it was to do with the PC being fired up for the first time, however it's becoming more consistent and is very frustrating.

What's happening

Essentially I have a problem with freezing and when the problem starts, a number of things happen.

1. The mouse intermittently freezes for 1 second. So, you'll be dragging the mouse across the screen, it'll freeze for 1 second, be unfrozen for another 1-2 seconds, freeze again for a split second and repeat. When the mouse 'unfreezes' it jumps to where the mouse would have been had it not frozen.

The following video visually demonstrates this behaviour:

2. When the mouse is 'frozen' , sound playing out of the computer becomes distorted.

3. Several seconds after the freezing behaviour starts, the internet disconnects.

Also maybe related:

4. When I put the computer into windows "sleep mode" or hibernation, when waking it back up the computer will be completely frozen. No movement, no Ctrl+Alt+Delete, no sound.

How often it's happening

Initially it was once every few days. A computer restart would be required to solve the issue. Now it's usually 20 minutes after booting the computer up and occurs 5 out of 7 days a week usually.

The PC Specs

Mobo: Asus P8Z77-V LX
CPU: Intel i5-3570k 3.4GHz (Quad core)
RAM: 16GB DDR3
Storage: 1TB Internal HDD
Graphics: 2GB XFX Radeon HD 7850
PSU: Corsair 550W 'Enthusiast series'

Other: PCI WLAN Card

What I've found out so far

Believe me I've done an awful lot of Google searching prior to posting here. The best result I found was a 400 page thread on the Microsoft support forum. From skimming it, it seems people think the cause is the use of a Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard. Unfortunately I don't own a ps2 keyboard and mouse to test whether this is the case, there's no way of actually 'reproducing' the problem.

What else can you tell us?

When the freezing starts, the CPU goes absolutely mental, especially core 0. The temperatures are pretty much in line with what they usually are, but the usage is absolutely wild (see attachment).

As I said I have no clue what's causing it, outdated drivers perhaps? I did notice warnings in my device manager (see attachment) but windows can't find any updates online.

Stumped on this one. Really appreciate your time reading and any assistance provided.

Kind regards.

Christian

Is my Optiarc ad-7560a ata fixable or defective?

$

Is there a definitive way to know if my OPTIARC AD-7560a ATA is fixable or defective? This is the question I most want answered. The drive worked when I purchased the laptop in 2008 and worked until a mysterious system crash in 2010 that I could not fix myself and could not be traced to a virus or anything else. The Best Buy Geek Squad revived my gasping machine almost totally, but the Optiarc was never the same. My laptop sees the drive, which runs and lights up but does nothing most of the time. Occasionally it displays disk contents in a window, asks for a disk to be inserted when there is a disk in the drive, or starts playing the contents and stops. I have downloaded the last, latest device driver from Sony Support, I deleted the Upper and Lower Filters from the registry per a Microsoft Tech Support Engineer (who was addressing someone else's query on the net), I have eyed a lot of posted suggestions on the web, and I ran the Sony Vaio Restore processes online from that website. The trouble persists. Does Tech Guy or anyone else have that definitive answer I need? If the drive just needs to be replaced, I want to know and get it done. Thank you! My system info:
Sony Vaio laptop VGN-NR220e
Windows Vista Premium with Service Packs 1 and 2, 32 bit
