Hi
It happens every time I start the Computer
Something very unusual is happening to my computer.Refuses to start and when it does sometime I receive a White window and now I receive a yellow window. While restarting the E tray opens.Restart again until the Tower emits a loud sound and a black windows tell me to ask for Support.I believe this is a window command:Windows failed at Checkpoint PnP4. There are too many info that I don't have the time to read all. Then I have a black window that ask me to choose between a windows Professional and a windows 2000.My windows is windows XP home edition. After the desktop is loaded, sometime the computer hangs and I have to start all over again. All the wires are connected and secure. The only thing that I believe is not normal is the ON-OFF Switch. The computer turn on even if I don't fully depress the switch.I own this computer for 7 years and never I did experience anything like this.
Windows xp sp3 home edition Dell 3000 desktop
I have Norton and I have used Microsoft Safety scanner,Malwares bites, with no virus found.
Thank you

Group Policy Installing Applications w/ UAC

I have a group policy to install a certain .msi file.

Did some testing, and it fails with errors on Win 7 computers with UAC turned on. When I turned UAC off, did a restart then it installs the application fine.

Looking to see what I need to do about the UAC, I don't really want to turn it all the way off on every computer.

I'm looking at the below group policy setting, to disable it.
Any insight on this? Will this turn UAC off for every application that a user tries to install?

User Account Control: Detect application installations and prompt for elevation
This policy setting controls the behavior of application installation detection for the computer.
The options are:
• Enabled: (Default for home) When an application installation package is detected that requires elevation of privilege, the user is prompted to enter an administrative user name and password. If the user enters valid credentials, the operation continues with the applicable privilege.
• Disabled: (Default for enterprise) Application installation packages are not detected and prompted for elevation. Enterprises that are running standard user desktops and use delegated installation technologies such as Group Policy Software Installation or Systems Management Server (SMS) should disable this policy setting. In this case, installer detection is unnecessary.

I the process of removing some of my unneeded programs, (grandkids games etc.) I inadvertantly must have removed a program that lets me browse articles within my email. Example, Conservative Byte email lists articles and when I click onto an article that I would like to read, I just get a Google search page and not the article. What did I uninstall to remove that function? Thanks for any help.

Looking for new desktop

I've had my XP desktop since 2008. Two years ago the card reader had to be replaced and 3 months ago the HD died (without warning, despite it being a SMART drive). It works fine now, but will be 5 years old this year and is using an OS that, let's face it, has entered the realm of "legacy equipment". Since I also provide tech support to a number of families/organizations (one of which just bought a Win 8 laptop), I need to be up to snuff on Win 8, so am looking for a new desktop.

The computer is used for business (Access databases, which I design; complex Excel spreadsheets; Word; e-mail and Web surfing). Do not play graphics-intensive games, but I am not very tolerant of slow-loading Web pages, movies that have to pause periodically, etc., so want one that is graphically fast. I prefer not to spend more than $1000.

I've done a fair amount of research and am most impressed by the HP Envy Phoenix h9-1330, but I'm not crazy about HP's support or reliability ratings. Anybody have an opinion on the Envy Phoenix series, or have any suggestions about other high-performance office computers?

printing emails in batch

I run win7 64bit and use firefox as my browser. My email are within google and gmail. I have a few different emails on both those sites which I use for various category content.

while i don't like to print my documents (paper), I find at times that my mailbox gets full and then I have to either delete my old emails and/or attachments (which I want to keep for future reference).

i know i can go into each email and print (pdf file) all the content. some of the emails have included the previous replys etc and others not. so would be very time consuming to read thru each one and decide which to print and which is duplicated in another reply.

my question is:
is there a way I can select, say by sender/or recepient OR folder
to print all the emails to one pdf file?
i know this is probably an unreal expectation...but it sure would save a lot of time going thru all the emails.

guess i should have been doing this all along but emails have got out of hand with all my researching.
thanks

Printing Results vary in MS Office 2010

Hi all. Having strange results printing in different Office 2010 apps. Control Panel preferences for default Lexmark Platinum Pro 905 are Tray 2, Quick Print, Black ink only. In both Word and Excel, adding color and changing the preferences to tray one and use all available ink have no effect and the printing defaults to the control panel settings. Obviously, if I change the CP settings to reflect my needs, prints perfectly. However, printing a doc with color from Outlook works OK. As a test, I also tried Wordpad, and that printed correctly. The driver used is the one Win8 installed, the Lexmark Pro800-Pro900 Series driver. Any ideas? Thanks - Al

I cannot download large files

Hi,

I looked on the forum before hand and couldnt quite find my problem on here. I recently reformatted my computer, updated etc. I never had problems downloading from storage sites before. Even after the recent reformat. Somthing I did must be interferring with my ability to download large files though.

I can still download small files like 5 mb, but files like 520 mb just keep loading forever and never start in my mozilla download window. If I try saving the link as it works but saves as like 536 bytes.

Ive tried shutting my firewall off, virus protection, but nothing has worked. I'd really rather not reformat AGAIN lol.

Thanks for the help.

Win-7 laptop temporarily refuses legetimate password

I have a fairly old HP laptop that I upgraded to Win-7 (from XP) several months ago. I've never had a serious problem with it before or since the upgrade. I was using the machine this morning, and when I was finished I closed the lid, putting the machine in standby. The last thing I did before shutting it down was to run a quick scan with MSE, which came up clean.

About ten minutes later, I returned to the machine and attempted to log back in from standby mode, only to discover that it wouldn't accept the account password. Tried several times, and checked the obvious "maybe it's the caps lock", to no avail.

The machine also has Ubuntu installed, and fortunately I used the same password for both operating systems. So, I tried logging into Ubuntu. Lo and behold, Ubuntu refused the password too. Tried a couple of more times, and suddenly Ubuntu gave in and logged me in.

So my best and only theory is that the keyboard may be getting flaky, but I've never once noticed any sort of problem since I bought the machine. And while in Ubuntu, I brought up a text editor and repeatedly typed the password. It was echoed to the screen correctly every time. So, I'm thinking maybe some sort of crud was fouling up one of the keys and finally worked itself out?

So, back to Windows and again it refuses the password! Tried a couple of more times, and after several refusals, it finally relented and let me log in. Opened a text editor in Windows and repeatedly typed my password until my hand got tired, and it displayed correctly every time.

So, it seems like the keyboard is ok, but if that isn't the explanation, what is?

Along the way, I discovered that Win-7 provides for the creation of a password recovery tool on removable media. After a couple of refusals, it started showing a clickable option for "Recover your password", which was useless to me because I hadn't created recovery tool. Didn't know the feature existed. Windows suggested options for the tool were only USB sticks or floppies(!). What about a CD? My laptop is old enough that it doesn't boot from a USB stick. Does the recovery tool require the machine to boot from media that contains it?

At this point, I've made a recovery tool on a USB stick, and will try to make one on a CD. But until I understand what the heck is going on, I'm reluctant to so much as close the lid on the machine for fear it won't let me back in.

Solved: windows 7 install on used HD problem

I have a 500 Gig Western digital HD, that I was using for files, under xp.
I cleared the files and reformatted it to a logical drive.
Then removed the XP hard drive, so that only this drive appeared to the computer.

I loaded windows 7 disk to the CD/DVD drive and when it got to the 500 gig HD, it said it could not do anything.

whats up with this? It won't format it or anything.

Wait.. update.
I had the option to delete this xp created partition. it did so. Then it formatted the drive for windows 7.. so as I was here typing this out, I figured out the problem.

And have decided to go ahead a post this, in case someone else has this problem.

missing CD/DVD drive

Hi all. I'm working on the laptop from Hades again with a different prob. this time. My neighbor brought it over and said the
CD/DVD drv. worked intermittently, then disappeared altogether.

I looked it over and saw that it wasn't showing in Computer, nor Device Mgr., so I've been all over the internet and did these:
Deleted LowerFilters in Reg. Edit. (UpperFilters wasn't listed)--rebooted--no success
Physically removed and re-inserted the drv.--no success
Ran MS FixIt--no success
Booted into Safe Mode--drv. is not shown there either
Ck'd. "dumbed down" PhoenixBIOS Setup vF.34--headings were Main, Security, System Configuration, Diagnostics, and Exit. In System Configuration>Boot Options>Boot Order:

ATAPI CD/DVD ROM Drive (I can hear the drv. "bump" during bootup)
Notebook Hard Drive
USB Diskette On Key
USB Hard Drive
Network Adapter

I let it go for a few days as I had others to work on, then she showed up up with a new drv. and insisted I install it. I told
her I didn't think the drv. was at fault, but I installed it as she DID NOT want the old drv. back in it. When I booted into
Windows, it found the new drv. and was shown in Computer and Device Mgr. After testing it with different CDs, DVDs, etc., all seemed OK until I tried to install MS Works (it got about halfway thru, then just sat there--no CD/DVD drv.activity whatsoever. I ck'd. Computer and Device Mgr.--no CD/DVD again!!!!!!!

I'm not a pc expert, so I'm now at a standstill. Could someone please help me fix this issue? Thanks in advance for any
suggestions.

Dropped Laptop

My son dropped his Dell Inspiron n5110 at college.

His screen is black.
I had him hook it up and display on an alternate screen, and alternate through the monitor display functions.
He was able to see the Windows 7 start up screen on the alternate screen...but it went black after the Windows start up, except for his cursor.
So, he has the Windows start up screen and use of his cursor on the alternate, and nothing on the laptop screen.

I hoped his display had just switched monitors...no luck.
Then I hoped it was just a lose connection between the motherboard and the monitor...but now it seems more than that.

Any ideas what would explain his symptoms?

Gateway GP6-400

I have already checked the forums and the question someone called ORS had related to my problem was answered privately and that was back in 2005.
I have been given a Gateway GP6-400. The systems still knows what it is but has forgotten certain software for its drivers. I can't seem to locate any one site for this model's drivers. Short of downloading and purchasing a driver updating program or looking up each individual component's manufacturers for the updates, could there be anything I could try before completely reinstalling the operating system?
